Area management

A retail area manager is responsible for several stores within a retail group.

The job of the retail area manager is to maximise the sales and profitability of retail outlets across groups, typically within symbols, multiples or the licensed trade. They are responsible for a number of outlets in a specific geographic area, working closely with individual managers to plan, coordinate, maintain and develop each outlet’s commercial performance.

Responsibilities

  • Motivating and coaching local managers towards achieving targets that will contribute towards the achievement of strategic goals.
  • Ensuring compliance with all health, safety and legal requirements.
  • Ensuring that premises and service levels are maintained to company standards.
  • Monitoring the business performance of outlets and setting and achieving profit targets.
  • Targeting and developing specific markets.
  • Promoting brands and increasing awareness of market and competitor activity.

Key skills required

These include the ability to motivate staff; strong leadership, communication and interpersonal skills; good decision-making and negotiation ability; and the ability to work on your own initiative.

Conditions

Working hours can be irregular and over Monday to Sunday. Geographic mobility is an essential part of this work.
