Arboriculturalist
Job description
An aboriculturist is required to carry out a lot of physical work in the care of trees. This includes felling, planting and performing tree surgery, which sometimes requires tree climbing and use of heavy equipment. They also work in conservation and provide education and advice about tree preservation.
Work activities
- Using heavy equipment, such as chainsaws, for felling and tree surgery.
- Managing tree planting contracts.
- Conducting site surveys and site planning.
- Writing reports to provide information about trees for the public, building contractors and government bodies.
- Liaising with government bodies, organisations and companies to ensure conservation and preservation measures are secured and maintained.
Entry requirements and training
Agricultural or biology degrees are relevant, but not always a requirement. Tree Care Ireland offers various courses in arboriculture. See professional bodies for further information on courses.
