Art gallery manager

Job description

This requires overseeing the multitude of duties involved in running a gallery space. They use artistic flair and knowledge in putting together exhibitions and in the assessment and selection of art work. This is combined with managerial skills and business acumen in planning and organising of exhibitions, administration, buying and selling of pieces, marketing and management of staff. They build close working relationships with both new and established artists and work to extend their client basis. Sizes of galleries vary greatly and some require managers who specialise in particular areas.

Entry requirements and training

An educational background in art or art history combined with management skills is necessary. Specialist art knowledge is required for some galleries.

There are various galleries across Ireland and Northern Ireland, however competition for jobs is high and vacancies are not always advertised. Work experience can be useful to develop contacts.
