Facilities manager

A facilities manager is responsible for planning, designing and managing premises facilities and for co-ordinating the physical workplace with the work of an organisation and its employees.

The role varies considerably depending on employers and the type of establishment they manage. Typical employers are also facilities companies which provide facilities management for various organisations.

Work activities

• Co-ordinating business strategies, budgets, costs and expenditures.
• Ensuring maintenance and health and safety is carried out to appropriate standards.
• Managing a variety of services and departments such as catering, reception, waste disposal, security and cleaning.
• Ensuring the building’s layout and space is used to its full potential.

Work conditions

Travel: is sometimes necessary when visiting other branches.
Working hours: vary depending on the role; can involve shift work, standard office hours or some longer hours.
Location: in public and private sectors across the Republic of |Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Entry requirements

Any degree discipline is accepted, though business, management, surveying, accountancy or engineering may be particularly useful. A degree in Property and Facilities Management is offered at Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT).
