A logistics and distribution manager co-ordinates the storage, transportation and delivery of goods.

Job description

The main responsibility of a logistics and distribution manager is to organise the safe and efficient storage and distribution of goods, and to ensure that orders are satisfied correctly. Typical employers of logistics and distribution managers are specialist distribution companies, consultancies, manufacturers, the armed forces, major commercial organisations and retailers.

Work activities

  • Working with procurement managers and buyers to source the right products
  • Negotiating contracts with suppliers and customers
  • Controlling manufacturing and delivery processes
  • Planning and implementing logistical strategy, ensuring targets are met
  • Overseeing product storage, handling and distribution
  • Using computer software to track goods from origin to delivery
  • Working on forecasts and inventories, keeping an accurate record of the process and analysing performance
  • Managing and motivating a team of supply chain staff
  • Improving the overall supply chain performance and look for any possible innovations to the process
  • Implementing new technologies and staying alert to new trends in the sector.

Work conditions

Travel: Daily travel may be necessary to meet suppliers and monitor progress. Occasional international trips can feature.
Working hours: Weekend and shift work is integral to many positions.
Location: across the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

  • Excellent relationship management skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with internal and external teams.

  • IT literacy and the ability to handle electronic data and be comfortable with new technology, networks and systems.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

Typical employers

Employers prefer graduates with a relevant qualification in distribution, logistics or transportation. Relevant experience is not expected, but any gained from placements can be useful.
