Aoife Habenicht

Job Area Manager
Employer Aldi Stores (Ireland) Ltd
Qualifications BA Engineering and German, University College Dublin (2003), MA Theatre and Drama Studies, University College Dublin (2004)

After graduating, I worked in theatre for three years but found little opportunity for career progression. I needed a completely new challenge. I was attracted by the responsibility that Aldi's area management positions offered and working in a target-driven environment appealed to me, so I applied for their graduate training programme.

The application process was tough, but it was definitely one of the most useful professional experiences I've had: it involved a group interview where you witness first-hand how other candidates conduct themselves. This was followed by two additional interviews, both of which lasted about one and a half hours. The year-long training course was intense: I started out as a store assistant and worked my way up to the cash office and management responsibilities. Training comprised three months in a local store followed by five months in various stores across Ireland; I'm currently based in Wexford. It's important to explore different stores, so a flexible approach to travel is necessary.

After my in-store training finished, I shadowed an experienced area manager for four months. I've now completed my formal training and have just been given my own 'area' consisting of two stores. It's my responsibility to manage the staff across both of them. Every day I visit my stores and audit cash handling, sales and staff productivity levels. I walk the shop floor with the store management and advise on issues that need addressing. I also deal with any personnel issues that may arise.

I particularly enjoy being my own timekeeper and the responsibility that comes with that. I have performance reviews several times a year with my line manager and I can always ring other Area Managers if I need advice. So although I often work alone, there is a great support network. My job is very target-driven and can be pressurised at times, but when my store exceeds its targets it's a great feeling.

There are opportunities for promotion to directorship within this role, but at the moment expanding my area is my goal. Over the next year I hope to progress to running three or four stores.
