Degree subject BA Hons Business Studies, MSc Marketing and Entrepreneurship
Job title Ulster Bank Retail Graduate Programme
Employer Ulster Bank – a part of the RBS Group
My first placement in retail was a customer-facing role, which was a great foundation for moving on to other areas in the business. At the moment I am working in our marketing department on youth strategy, supporting the delivery of this year's student campaign throughout Northern Ireland. Perhaps the biggest challenge – and highlight – so far has been working on a project that gave my employer a campus presence during registration and enrolment at both major universities in Northern Ireland. I enjoyed being part of a team that delivered a project from start to finish, and it was great to get out on the road and back to university.
I haven't yet encountered a typical day at the office, which is why I enjoy the job so much. One day I could be in the office processing invoices, and the next I could be out selling on the front line. The best thing about the job has to be the people. The worst thing has to be leaving a team you have become part of, when you're moving on to another part of the business. The retail programme allocates time throughout the year for regular training; I have attended several courses already including business writing and a product management course specific to my placement in marketing.
Start applying early, and when you've found a company or job that interests you, do your research. There's nothing worse than going into an interview and not knowing anything about the company you're applying to work in.
