John Joe Baxter
Degree subject Construction Management
Job title Site Engineer
Employer PJ Hegarty & Sons
During my third year of college I undertook seven months' work placement as junior site engineer with PJ Hegarty. When I completed my degree they offered me a job on their graduate training scheme as a site engineer. The four-year graduate training scheme covers areas such as project cost control, planning, quality control and management skills. It has introduced me to all the other areas of construction that are necessary for a successful job to be completed.
At the moment I am senior engineer on an €11 million project. This involves a number of different construction elements including structural concrete, structural steel and stone cladding. My role on site was to co-ordinate and manage all of these trades during the various stages of the project and ensure that each element was completed on time and to a very high standard of work. I am also responsible for the quality assurance programme on site.
Advice for graduates
In this line of work you need to be a team player – it takes a full team working together to complete a job, not one person. You also need to have an appetite for learning. With the way the construction industry is moving at the moment, new construction techniques are being implemented every day.
