Quantity Surveyor, PJ Hegarty & Sons

Degree subject Construction Economics and Management

Job title Quantity Surveyor

Employer PJ Hegarty & Sons

PJ Hegarty & Sons invited applicants from my final year college class to undertake a part-time research masters at DIT with the company as sponsor. I was successful in winning the place and joined the company in June 2005.

I am now completing a research masters while working part-time as a junior quantity surveyor. This involves a four-day working week, with the rest of my time taken up by my research on electronic tendering in the Irish construction industry.

Most of my work is site based and involves many aspects of quantity surveying. During my working week I deal with everything from the initial procurement of subcontractors to the administration of the final account. I also attend site meetings with the project quantity surveyors, architects and engineers on the project.

Since I began this role, I have enjoyed the challenges of dealing with the wide range of design and programme concerns that have arisen on the jobs I have undertaken. This has meant finding an adequate solution that is cost effective and that will also fall within our project duration.

My employer also provides a training programme for quantity surveying staff which prepares us for the Society of Chartered Surveyors Assessment of Professional Competence. I attend regular performance reviews to identify relevant in-house and external courses which will benefit my continuing professional development. Since joining the company I have undertaken a wide range of courses ranging from training on computer software to dealing with tradesmen and their productivity.
