Barry Pierce, Musgrave Retail Partners Ireland
Midway through my final year at UCC I applied for the Musgrave Finance Graduate Programme. CIMA was the finance qualification of choice at Musgrave, and my accounting degree provided the ideal starting point. Ten years later and I’m still learning!
A turning point
After two and a half years of hard work it was great to pass my finals and finally become a qualified accountant. Shortly afterwards I completed the graduate programme and was promoted to Finance Manager of a finance team.
Twelve months ago I applied for and was offered the role of Head of Trading on the Financial Analysis team. It’s been hard work but has allowed me to really develop my skills, giving me great exposure to the senior management team with whom I work daily. It’s also given me the chance to work on key strategic challenges within the business.
Advice for graduates
Find an industry that suits you, and a company that will give you the support and opportunities to develop your potential. Be prepared to start at the bottom and work up.
Skills for future leaders
In today’s fast-moving industries, decision-making is imperative, and the ability to make the right decisions quickly is more important than ever. Ultimately, leaders of tomorrow will win by creating the right team with the right balance, and nurturing the passion and motivation within that team.
