#GradStories Abigail Cronin, Area Manager, Aldi
What are your main tasks in a normal week?
It's quite a dynamic role, it changes from day to day but some my regular tasks would include things like recruitment, staff development and discussing key performance indicators with store managers.
What skills do you need to be successful in your role?
The two most important skills I would say would be communication and organization. On a day-to-day basis, I could be speaking with a store assistant, a deputy store manager, a store manager and a store operations director. Being able to communicate very clearly and efficiently with all parties is really important.
What do you love most about your job?
What I love most about my role is working with like-minded hard-working people as well as seeing staff develop, grow and progress within the business. I also love the flexibility of my role I'm completely in charge of my own work schedule.
How did you get into your job?
I have a bachelor of arts in English and geography and a master's of science in applied coastal and marine management. When I applied for ALDI, I wasn't sure if my previous skills would have been as applicable. However, throughout my college course, I developed my leadership skills through captaining and founding the UCC powerlifting club as well as being the a core coordinator for the charity service. In my previous role, I would have built up my communication skills. I was a science communicator for international projects. This role also showed my flexibility as I would have been both offshore and traveling and as part of my training.
What skills should students develop if they are interested in this career?
If I was to give my younger self some advice, it would to develop your communication skills in university. These skills are applicable to any role that you apply for.
