Emily Power, Data Scientist, Wavteq (Career Boost Programme)
What sort of work would you do in a normal week?
Data science is like one gigantic puzzle. Through AI we predict outcomes from sets of data, so our role is to test data and, through technology, come up with data predictions that we can use as answers.
What skills do you need to be successful in your role?
The main skills which you would need as a data scientist would be problem-solving skills, you need to be able to see the puzzle, understand the puzzle and then solve the puzzle. You also need to be open to new technology and be very adaptable.
What do you love about your job?
The best thing about my job is solving an overall puzzle of problem, to be able to go in and det the detail I need to do that is something that gives me great job satisfaction.
How did you get into your job?
I was looking for job opportunities in the area of artificial intelligence, it’s an area I am really passionate about. Wavteq are part of the Fusion programme, run through Intertrade Ireland, so I applied and was successful?
What one skills would you recommend to students to improve on if they want to work in this area?
Mathematics and the ability to identify and solve problems would be the core skill that’s needed. You then need to be able to apply those skills across a range of different sets of data.
