3D Computer Animation

Course Description This course aims to enable students to become competent in the more artistically-focused disciplines within computer animation and produce graduates with the range and depth of technical and artistic skills necessary to become future technical, character, or environment artists, animators, modellers, sculptors and riggers as well as project managers and animation producers.

This course is aimed at candidates from a variety of backgrounds, including traditional animation, film, multimedia, fine art and architecture.

This programme is designed for graduates who wish to upskill for the Animation, Games or Film industry.

Entry requirements

Minimum Entry Requirements
The entry requirements for the programme are as follows:
An Honours Bachelor Degree (NFQ Level 8) (or other internationally recognised equivalent), in the field of study of art, design, computing or engineering.
An approved Portfolio of relevant Art work.

Applicants who do not meet the academic entry requirements but who have significant relevant experience in the technology or media sectors are encouraged to apply under the Institute's Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy that allows recognition for both formal and informal learning, nonaccredited personal and professional education and work based training. International students must have a minimum level of English equivalent to IELTS 6.0.

Course Delivery
The course will be delivered over 2 years (4 semesters) in part-time blended mode (80% online, 20% face-to-face) and will be ideally suited to those who cannot commit to full-time study. Online learning will take place three evenings per week typically between 6:00pm – 9:00pm. For face-to-face learning attendance is required on the DkIT campus one Saturday per month (maximum three times per semester).

Graduates of the course will gain the knowledge, skills and competencies in the area of 3D computer animation and will be equipped to follow career paths such as:

?? 3D Animator: Creating high standard animation for broadcast, showcasing a variety of animation performance while applying the principles of animation.

?? 3D Modeller: Modelling artefacts with correct topology and edge flow. Optimized for UV unwrapping and rigging.

?? Rigging Technical Director (Tools / Pipeline): Involved in the developing of rigging related tools, integrating tools into a robust pipeline, involved in 'in-studio' tool development.

?? Texture (Look Dev) Artist: Creating shaders and texture maps for characters, environments and props. Exhibiting the ability for Photo Real and stylised texture maps as required.

?? Rigger: Design, create, test and maintain character set ups. Provide technical feedback to modelling department.

?? VFX Designer and Animator: Designing solutions for the visual effects in Animation and Film.

?? 2D Animator: Creating motion graphics using 2D and 3D techniques.

?? Level Designer: Import 3D assets to design levels for virtual reality or augmented reality interactive environments

?? Project Manager: Manage all aspects of 3D Computer Animation along the animation pipeline.
