Why study The Higher Diploma in Engineering in Building Information Modelling
In the context of construction, BIM is the process of delivering and operating built assets using well-structured digital information that all the necessary parties have access to. It is a way of working, rather than a physical object or an entity.

Operating in this way – often referred to as 'working in a BIM environment' – requires all parties to collaborate and share the information they create in a mutually accessible online space known as a Common Data Environment or CDE. This way, everyone who needs to access the information can get it. That collection of data is known as an 'information model'. Information models can be used to inform all stages of a built asset's lifecycle; from inception, right through to operation and renewal.

The H.Dip in BIM at GMIT is a multi-disciplinary programme which is open to construction professionals and others who already have a relevant Level 7 or Level 8 qualification in a cognate area. This Programme has been designed to rapidly up-skill construction professionals and others in BIM technologies and processes to meet industry demand.

The complete course will be delivered on two evenings per week over one academic year.

Entry requirements

To qualify for entry to this programme an applicant must hold a relevant Level 7 qualification or equivalent in a cognate area within the construction and built environment industry. Applications will also be accepted from mature applicants who have worked at an appropriate level within the construction industry and who may gain entry by the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process.

Subjects taught

What will I study?
On completion of this programme the student will:
• Understand and evaluate the interaction processes involved in designing, constructing and managing a building through use of BIM 3D models and data sets.

• Analyse and select BIM management techniques to achieve the desired deliverables and performance outcomes, including how BIM can contribute to making buildings energy and carbon efficient, sustainable and environmentally friendly, and manage the processes required to optimise these outcomes.

• Be able to construct 3D Virtual Building Models for a variety of situations including Architectural, Infrastructure, Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing.

• Be able to manage the application of various BIM software packages, their integration, the necessary protocols and procedures needed for networks, database systems and information sharing.

On successful completion of Module 1, 6, 7 and one module selected from 2 - 5 the graduate is awarded the Higher Diploma in Engineering in BIM.


1 academic year, 2 evenings per week.
Delivery commences in September 2018. From September to December the two mandatory 10 credit modules (BIM Fundamentals and BIM Collaboration) will be delivered two evenings per week 6-10pm. From January to May students may choose one elective module (10 credits) which will be delivered one evening per week and the Major Project (30 credits) which students can complete in their workplace with the assistance and supervision of a member of the GMIT academic team. The full 60 credit programme is completed over one calendar year.

Part-time option (over 2 academic years)
The delivery of the programme is designed to allow participants stay in the work-place and attend GMIT one evening/week, while completing this part-time 2 year post-graduate award.
