Conflict Resolution in Education
This Post Graduate Certificate is designed to meet the learning needs of mediators who want to deepen their knowledge and skills for practice in the education sector. This highly interactive and integrated programme explores how theory applies to practice and skills development through exercises and roleplay which enables the mediator to integrate their career experience and abilities with mediation and conflict intervention practice. It prepares mediators for the demanding work of facilitating the resolution of interest based conflict as it arises in education settings.

This highly interactive and integrated programme explores how theory applies to practice. Students develop skills through presentations, exercises and role-play. This enables the mediator to integrate their career experience and abilities with mediation and conflict intervention practice.
It prepares mediators for the demanding work of facilitating the resolution of interest based conflict as it arises in education settings. Students' complete two modules from five listed below depending on learning needs. Choices will be made in collaboration with the course director.
A primary degree in any subject
• A written Personal Statement
• References from two referees
Applicants must have a recognized primary degree which is considered equivalent to Irish university primary degree level.
Applicants without a primary degree may be considered if they have a Maynooth University Diploma in Mediation and Conflict Intervention OR if they have all of the following:
A Certified Mediation Training and a Mediation Competency Assessment (Accredited by the Mediators Institute of Ireland or equivalent)
An extensive career portfolio of at least 10 years in total including at least three years practicing as a mediator
Minimum English language requirements: please visit Maynooth University International Office website for information about English language tests accepted and required scores. The requirements specified are applicable for both EU and non-EU applicants.

Indicators of the module content are list below.
MC615: Mediation Knowledge & Practice: This module is designed to provide knowledge and skills in conflict resolution and mediation. It is compulsory for those students who have not already obtained appropriate certification as a mediator. The Mediators Institute Ireland (MII) has approved this module as a Certificate Training for mediators. It is a highly interactive and integrated programme bringing together the essential knowledge skills and attitudes for the demanding work of facilitating the resolution of emotion and interest based conflict.
Conflict Resolution in Education (MC611): This module covers aspects of conflict resolution in education from skills learning in the classroom through to organizational dispute resolution for schools. Students gain an understanding of the different models of conflict resolution in education and learn how to apply them. Students will learn how to develop conflict resolution education programmes in an educational setting and to analyse conflict and create relevant interventions.
Restorative Practice in Schools (MC616) This module delivers knowledge and skills students to work restoratively in the school community and with the wider community and families. The programmes focus is on transformative learning relationships with students, parents, staff, Boards of Management and the wider society. Students learn through presentations, discussion, skills practice and critically analysing the principles, theories and philosophy of a restorative approach. A whole school methodology is taken in partnership with members of the school community while also focusing on the transference of these skills to the family and wider community.
Mediation Theory & Conflict Analysis (MC601): Dynamics of conflict, ideologies shaping conflict resolution, processes of negotiation, conciliation and mediation, conflict interveners role, functions and skills, the many ways of intervention, communication in conflict, mediation: art or science, theory informed practice and ideological perspectives.
Values And Relationship In Conflict Intervention (MC606): Core principles guiding mediation practice, problem solving mediation, transformative mediation, conflict coaching, reflective practice, ethical debates.
1 year part-time
In general, there are two levels of fees payable. EU students from EU countries including Ireland pay a subsidised level of fees for both taught courses and research programmes. Tuition fees for students from outside the EU are not subsidised and are thus somewhat higher than for EU students.
Post Course Info
Graduates from this programme can expect to use their enhanced mediation knowledge and skills to improve their performance in their current employment with many introducing new concepts to make changes in their own organisation's approach to conflict. This programme is accredited as two modules of the Masters in Mediation & Conflict Intervention.
