The Professional Master of Education (Art and Design) is a new two-year, full-time Level 9 postgraduate professional teacher education programme offered jointly by C.I.T., Crawford College of Art & Design (C.I.T. C.C.A.D.) and U.C.C. that leads to a professional qualification as post-primary teacher of Art and Design. It is recognised and accredited by the Teaching Council of Ireland for the purpose of registration as a post-primary teacher of Art and Design in Ireland and the EU. The programme integrates three strands of study. Firstly, it involves the student in direct teaching of Art and Design through two, year-long school placements. Secondly, students attend a range of art and design workshops and lectures that broaden their subject knowledge to meet the demands of the post-primary Art and Design curricula along with exploring Art and Design Pedagogy. Thirdly, students attend lectures and tutorials at both C.I.T. the C.C.A.D. and U.C.C., which develop student teachers' requisite professional knowledge, skills, understanding and competences.
During the two-year PME (Art and Design) programme, students are introduced to best practice in teaching, learning and educational research with special emphasis on meeting the diverse needs of learners, on the curriculum and on current issues in education. Students are encouraged to integrate educational theory and practice through extensive reflection on their own professional classroom practice. They are supported in their development by experienced teachers in schools and tutored by specialist C.I.T., C.C.A.D. and U.C.C. staff in nurturing their professional identity as teachers.
The PME - Art and Design is a two-year, 120 credit Level 9 programme leading to a professional teaching qualification, in post-primary education upon Registration with the Teaching Council. It is offered jointly by C.I.T., C.C.A.D. and U.C.C. and is organised in partnership with second-level schools, normally located within a 50 km (30 mile) radius of Cork city. As part of their University programme, some students are required to undertake placement and training that involve dealing directly with patients, clients or service users. This programme is subject to the University's Fitness to Practise Policy - full details may be found : Policy. Students will be required to start in their school placement anytime from 19th August onwards 2019.
Deferrals are not permitted on this programme.
At the end of the programme, you will have acquired the professional knowledge, the diverse subject knowledge, the understanding and skills that you need to teach Art and Design in a secondary-level school. You will have gained practical experience in two contrasting school settings, and will have developed your ability to respond flexibly to the diverse and changing needs of students aged from 12 to 18 years. You will have been challenged, encouraged and invited to question your beliefs and assumptions about the purpose of education, the nature of teaching and learning and the role of the teacher in the 21st century.
Candidates must have as a minimum requirement a H 2:2 primary degree in a Fine Art or Design discipline(s) or equivalent (for example Degree + Masters that is recognised by the Teaching Council of Ireland as qualifying you, to teach Art and Design at post-primary level, upon registration with the Teaching Council. Please be advised the Teaching Council does not pre assess qualifications for individuals who are applying for the PME Art & Design and it is up to applicants to self-assess their qualifications to ensure they meet the requirements for the PME Art & Design providers and the Teaching Council.

Interviews are expected to be held in April 2020 and May 2020.
This programme requires applicants to undergo a Garda Vetting process which will be conducted through the UCC Admissions Office with the successful applicants. This requirement is due to the mandatory external placement element of the programme which will bring the applicant into contact with children or vulnerable adults and in which they will assume positions of trust. In the Republic of Ireland responsibility for the vetting of all personnel working in a full-time, part-time or in a voluntary capacity with children or vulnerable adults, lies with the Garda Central Vetting Unit (GCVU) which is located in Thurles. U.C.C. has engaged with the GCVU to develop liaison mechanisms which will aid the Garda Vetting process. Commencement of school placement and registration on the programme are subject to full compliance with the University's policy, practice and requirements in respect of Garda Vetting.

In Year 1, students undertake 60 credits of learning:

Practice, Curriculum and Pedagogy of Art and Design (10 credits); i.e. curriculum-related art and design practice (5 credits) and the teaching of Art and Design (5 credits)
Foundation Studies (20 credits) i.e philosophy and history of education (5 credits), psychology and sociology of education (5 credits); inclusion-special educational needs and multicultural education (5 credits), and curriculum and assessment (5 credits)
In Year 2, students undertake a further 60 credits of learning:
School placement-related activity (35 credits) i.e. school placement of Art and Design 2 (30 credits) and collaborative seminar examining contemporary issues in Irish schools (5 credits)
Critical Art and and Design Pedagogy i.e The teaching of Art and Design 2 (5 credits)
Literacy and Numeracy Development in the Post Primary Classroom (5 credits)
Foundational Themes in Education (5 credits)
Research in Art and Design Education - Professional Research Paper in Education (10 credits)
