Education - Learning & Teaching - Adult & Workforce Education

This course is designed to provide rigorous and systematic coverage of topics relating to learning and development. Mastery of the knowledge, skills, and competencies addressed in the programme will enable graduates to become more proficient and professional educators at college-level and in other learning and development contexts.

A considerable body of scholarly knowledge, far greater than often realised, exists on how students learn and how their learning can be facilitated through effective teaching. This programme provides candidates with a sound foundation in (1) various theoretical perspectives on effective learning and teaching; (2) practical skills to apply these theoretical understandings to one's own training; and (3) research skills needed to extend understanding of learning and teaching to others and to investigate new techniques for learner development.

Who is the course for?
The course is ideally suited to those within adult or workforce education contexts, or those who wish to pursue employment in the field of education and training including:
• Learning and development specialists
• Educational consultants
• Corporate and private trainers and tutors
• Instructional designers
• Training managers
• Learning and development managers
• Anyone who has been involved in a role of learning and development in an adult or workforce education environment and who wishes to up-skill.

Entry requirements

Applicants holding an honours degree 2.2 (level 8) in any discipline ideally with professional involvement in the facilitation of learning or training will be considered for the course. The college operates a Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning (RPEL) scheme, which means that applicants who do not meet the normal academic requirements may be considered based on relevant work or other relevant experience. All applicants will be interviewed by the Programme Director or member of the programme team, applicants may also be required to provide a specified written assignment. Depending on where applicants are working, there may also be a requirement for Garda vetting.

This course has a blended approach that schedules some classroom-based lectures alongside online classes. This gives students the opportunity to meet-up in the college and speak directly with lecturers.

This course runs over 1 calendar year.

Indicative Schedule
Tuesday and Thursday 18.30 - 21.30 and some Saturdays 09.30 - 13.30. Some classes may be delivered online.

Please note that exams can be scheduled during the morning, afternoon or evening Monday to Saturday.


Fees €4,750 (Fees revised annually).

Students who successfully complete this course may opt to defer this award and proceed to complete the Master of Arts in Learning and Teaching.
