Education & Well-being of the Older Person
This one-year Master's programme addresses salient national and international issues in relation to Global Ageing. Older people are the fastest growing population group in Ireland and this poses great opportunities and threats for our society. This programme addresses the sociology of ageing, psychology and physiology of ageing. It also looks at education of the older person with Lifelong Learning underpinning European and national educational policy.
Applicants to the programme come from a variety of backgrounds - in the health and social care sector, some older people themselves and those interested in this global issue.
Students will explore policy development internationally and nationally in relation to our ageing society. Students will research an area of interest from their studies to write a research dissertation.
It is expected that graduates of the programme will contribute to social development and older persons' services in Ireland.
Applicants to the programme will be considered on the basis of possession of a Primary Degree in a relevant discipline (Level 8) at a minimum of 2.2 honours.
Where applicant does not meet normal entry requirements they can be assessed for prior learning in line with University policy and procedures on the recognition of prior learning. The admission procedure will include an interview wherein prior learning and experience of applicants in education will be assessed.
English Language Requirements
Applicants for whom English is not a first language must provide evidence of their proficiency level English in the form of an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) composite score of 6.5 – 7.0 with no less than 6.0 in any one component, or IELTS equivalent accepted by UL. Such applicants will also be required to undergo an interview through English.

•Physiology & Psychology of Ageing
•Education and the Older Person
•Policy, Participation & the Law
•Active Ageing, Leadership & Advocacy
•Principles & Practice of Research in Education
All modules have a mixture of assessments including class presentations, reflective journals and written assignments.
A research dissertation also has to be completed (20,000 words).
1 year full-time.

Graduates of the MAEWOP have found work in the area of Older Persons Services in both the statutory and voluntary sector.
Some graduates have gone on to undertake further study at PhD level.
