Emergency Medical Science - Advanced Paramedic

The Centre for Emergency Medical Science (CEMS) offers an MSc Emergency Medical Science (Advanced Paramedic). Candidates complete a minor thesis by primary research in a relevant area of pre-hospital emergency care and acquire a further 30 ECTS credits.

Candidates will complete a primary research project in a subject area related to the practice of
Emergency Medical Science/pre-hospital emergency care.
This component involves the design, data collection, analysis and submission of a piece of primary research in the area of EMS/pre-hospital emergency care. The research question is fundamental – it should be simple, answerable and relevant. Most research will be descriptive, i.e. it will not be necessary to test or compare different interventions such as drugs or skills. However, some projects may involve comparisons, particularly in areas such as training.

The thesis will be undertaken over two semesters

A supervisor will be appointed to each student on an individual basis to offer support

External and internal assessors will report on the completed dissertation

A research proposal must be submitted and approved before acceptance to the module.

Candidates will demonstrate:
Learning Objectives
Familiarity with study design, selection of appropriate methodologies, samples and power calculations

Ability to prepare a research proposal and ethics/funding applications as required

Data collection, collation, analysis and interpretation skills
Ability to prepare and present a completed thesis, including an appropriate literature search and critique of the completed research

Entry requirements

Access to this module is open to graduates of the UCD H Dip EMT or UCD Grad Dip EMS. A research proposal must be submitted and approved before acceptance to the module.
