Mathematics & Statistics - Mathematical Science
Graduate Taught (level 9 nfq, credits 90)
This MSc programme combines a taught masters and a dissertation. It is an extremely versatile programme, giving students the opportunity, depending on their background, to choose from a range of modules and projects from the different disciplines of Mathematics, Applied and Computational Mathematics and Statistics within the UCD School of Mathematics and Statistics.
- School engages with research of international renown
- Several members in the UCD School of Mathematical Sciences are involved in the UCD Complex Adaptive Systems Laboratory (CASL) and the Insight Centre for Data Analytics.
- Opportunity to combine one or more disciplines from the mathematical sciences
Who should apply?
Full Time option suitable for:
Domestic(EEA) applicants: Yes
International (Non EEA) applicants currently residing outside of the EEA Region. Yes
The UCD MSc Mathematical Science is designed for mathematics and applied mathematics graduates with a passion for their subject and a desire to up skill to a level required to embark on a career in research.
Vision & Values Statement
This programme is aimed at students who wish to gain a deep understanding of mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics at the graduate level and will equip such students with the skills necessary to carry out research at the frontier of mathematical knowledge. We expect our students to gain a thorough understanding of mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics at the graduate level, as well as a broad understanding of areas of modern mathematical science under active research. We expect our students to become autonomous learners and researchers capable of setting their own research agenda. They will be capable of solving relevant problems in the language of mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics. Our graduates will be suitably qualified for research at the PhD level in an area of mathematics, applied mathematics or statistics, and will be valued for their technical knowledge and research skills. Equally, our graduates will be in demand by employers for their ability to use the tools they have learned to explain, describe and predict. We value students who already have a strong mathematical training and are motivated to take this understanding further. We aim to provide a teaching and learning environment that develops confidence and independence through a wide variety of interactive formats, both inside and outside the classroom.

Entry requirements
This programme is intended for applicants with a degree (usually a 4-year degree) in Statistics, Mathematics, Mathematical Physics, Applied Mathematics or Theoretical Physics, in a programme for which the course requirements are of comparable content and standard to that of the corresponding four-year UCD BSc Degree. An upper second class honours, or international equivalent is required.
Applicants who have been awarded an upper second class honours or higher in the Higher Diploma in Mathematical Sciences are eligible for the programme.
Applicants whose first language is not English must also demonstrate English language proficiency of IELTS 6.5 (no band less than 6.0 in each element), or equivalent.
External or non- UCD applicants may be asked to provide further details on any Maths or Maths related modules taken
Students meeting the programme's academic entry requirements but not the English language requirements, may enter the programme upon successful completion of UCD's Pre-Sessional or International Pre-Master's Pathway programmes.
