Mediation & Conflict Intervention - Law Society

This Certificate is designed to provide knowledge and skills in conflict resolution and mediation in collaboration with the Law Society of Ireland Skillnet. This is a highly interactive and integrated programme, bringing together the essential knowledge skills and attitudes for the demanding work of facilitating the resolution of interest based conflict. Theoretical presentations, the exploration of how theory applies to practice and skills development through exercises and roleplay enable participants integrate their experience and abilities with mediation and conflict intervention practice.

On successful completion of the programme what shall I receive?
•The highest quality training in mediation theory and skills.
•A Post Graduate Certificate in Mediation & Conflict Intervention, at level nine, from Maynooth University. ***
•A Competency Certificate in Mediation accredited by the Mediators Institute of Ireland, following attendance on the course, the successful passing of assignments and a Mediation Role-Play Competency Assessment. This Certificate gives access to registration for Certified Status with the Mediator's Institute of Ireland.
•Recognition for two modules of the Masters in Mediation & Conflict Intervention at Maynooth University. Students who are successful will be deemed to have completed two modules of nine required for the Masters in Mediation & Conflict Intervention to which they can add modules to build either to a Postgraduate Diploma in Mediation & Conflict Intervention or complete a Masters in Mediation & Conflict Intervention.

This programme is run in conjunction with the Edward M Kennedy Institute for Conflict Intervention at Maynooth University. The Institute, dedicated to the late Senator Edward M Kennedy as an acknowledgement of his immense commitment to Ireland, is an interactive hub which actively promotes learning, research, best practice and dialogue in the field of conflict intervention. Entry requirements

Applicants will be required to have all of the following:
•A primary degree in any subject.
•Career experience relevant to mediation & conflict intervention.
•A written Personal Statement from the applicant
•References from two referees.
•A Mediators' Institute of Ireland Certified Training course or equivalent is desirable but not essential.

Applicants without a primary degree may be considered if they have:
•A Maynooth University Diploma in Mediation & Conflict Intervention.

OR if they have all of the following:
•A Certified Mediation Training and a Mediation Role Play Competency Assessment (accredited by the Mediators Institute of Ireland or equivalent)
•An extensive career portfolio of not less than 10 years in total, including at least three years practice as a mediator
•A written Personal Statement from the applicant
•References from two referees.
•Successfully completed interview with the Programme Director.

Subjects taught

The modules run full days on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It is important to note that attendance is compulsory. If you have accreditation with the MII already then the modules covered are:


The Mediators Institute Ireland (MII) has approved this training as meeting their 32 hours of mandatory additional information to practice in the area of separating couples mediation.


This module covers the processes and strategies of negotiation and mediation in relation to commercial disputes.

If students do not have accreditation with the MII, then one of these modules will be replaced with MC615: Mediation Knowledge and Skills which provides the required standard of mediation training to apply for membership of the Mediators' Institute of Ireland (MII) as well as additional knowledge and skills.

In general, there are two levels of fees payable. EU students from EU countries including Ireland pay a subsidised level of fees for both taught courses and research programmes. Tuition fees for students from outside the EU are not subsidised and are thus somewhat higher than for EU students.

Post Course Info

Graduates are provided with the knowledge and skill base for mediation practice. On successful completion of the programme graduates may apply for Certified Status with the Mediators Institute of Ireland and can advertise their practice on the MII website. Graduates will generally find work in this field through self employment. Some agencies, providing a mediation service, employ mediators, however many graduates use the knowledge and skills gained on the course for application in their current employment.
