Nursing - Heart Failure Nursing

The Professional Certificate Heart Failure Nursing is a 10 ECTS level 9 programme that is based on the curriculum developed by UCD and The Heart Failure Association & Council of Nursing & Allied Professionals of the European Society of Cardiology. It focuses on the role of the nurse in the care of persons with heart failure. This course will provide the nurse with an opportunity to develop, enhance and maintain the specialist skills that are required to care for patients with heart failure.

Who is the programme for?
All registered nurses who provide clinical nursing care to persons with heart failure.

The Professional Certificate in Nursing Studies (Heart Failure) aims to:

· Assist students to gain advanced knowledge, skills and attitudes based on a holistic view of the patient throughout the continuum of care.

· Develop a greater understanding of the holistic principles which underpin the various aspects of nursing particularly in relation to heart failure.

· Provide students with an opportunity for personal growth and professional development.

· Develop skills to enhance their professional practice, including physical assessment skills, critical analysis, creative thinking, decision making, and communication skills.

On successful completion of all components of this programme the student will be awarded a UCD Professional Certificate in Heart Failure Nursing.

Subjects taught

The Professional Certificate in Heart Failure Nursing consists of one 10 credit module.

We use a range of teaching methods including lectures, workshops, seminars and discussion forum.

Students will be invited to attend classes on campus (usually three times during the programme - dates TBC)

Module learning outcomes will be assessed via an online student forum and a poster presentation.

Entry requirements

Applicants:

Must hold a primary degree or equivalent in Nursing or a related discipline.

Must be entered onto the appropriate division of the Nurses
Register maintained Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI)

A Higher Diploma or Graduate Diploma in Cardiovascular Nursing is desirable, but not essential.

Must have at least one year's post-registration experience at time of application.

Be employed as a registered nurse providing clinical nursing care to persons with heart failure.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

All applicants must hold an academic qualification at NQAI Level 8 (e.g., Honours Degree or Higher Diploma). Applicants who do not possess an academic award at Level 8 or higher, may apply for entry on the basis of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Students will be asked to submit a portfolio of evidence demonstrating their ability to undertake the programmes.

It is essential that you have access to a personal computer and an email account as communication with students is primarily undertaken by email. Lecture handouts/announcements are made available to students via Blackboard (a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) that supports online learning and teaching) and/or via email. Messages from the university regarding examination policy and procedures are also sent via email.
