Nursing - Intercultural Care - Module

The purpose of this module is to examine the knowledge, skills and attitudes required by health care professionals to provide competent care in culturally appropriate ways for individuals from diverse cultural, ethnic and linguistic backgrounds. Opportunities to critically review factors that facilitate and hinder culturally competent practice are facilitated. Opportunities to critically examine approaches for developing cultural awareness, cultural knowledge, cultural sensitivity and cultural competence in the delivery of health care, are also provided.

Globalisation and the changing demographic profile within healthcare; opportunities and challenges of living and working in culturally diverse societies globally, concepts of culture, race and ethnicity; theories and models promoting transcultural health and cultural competence; cultural identity and self-awareness, ethnocentrism and stereotyping,

National and international legislation and influences related to immigration, human rights, discrimination and healthcare/service provision, policy developments that promote cultural sensitivity at an individual, organisational and society level, cultural generic and cultural specific knowledge, intercultural communication, challenging racism, discrimination and inequalities.

Entry requirements

A Registered Nurse or Registered Midwife on the current register of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.

Applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of either prior successful completion of a degree qualification taught through the medium of English or meet criteria identified in the English Language qualifications set by the University of Limerick.

Successful completion of this module does not automatically qualify you for entry into a further award. All programme applicants must meet the entry requirements listed if applying for a further award.
