Professional Certificate Pain Management
The Professional Certificate Pain Management is a programme comprised of one taught module with an integrated supervised clinical practicum. The programme consists of 10 ECTS credits at Level 9 and is a stand-alone module for nurses/midwives in any clinical setting. This Professional Certificate is a core specialist module on the Pain Developmental Education Program. This programme is affiliated with American Society for Pain Management in Nursing. In addition, the student who attains the highest mark can become a recipient of the Irish Pain Society Scholarship Medal.

Who is the programme for?
This professional certificate is designed for nurses/midwives who are interested in becoming knowledgeable in the study of pain, the prevention of pain and understanding the complex nature of pain.

What will I learn?
We aim to expand your knowledge and skills in pain management education in the context of clinical assessment methods across the trajectory of care.

You will learn advanced knowledge on pain prevention and management and apply these skills to clinical settings. Your clinical practicum in the Department of Pain Medicine, Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, will be facilitated by an expert nurse in pain.

You will be able to apply specialist skills in pain care in your clinical setting and advance your career across pain management settings.

The student body is drawn from a wide variety of clinical specialisms and organisations, enabling the sharing of learning and experience between you and your class members, as well as from the academic staff.

Programme structure
The programme is delivered over one semester (September – December) and has a clinical component. The module is entitled Pain Management (10 ECTS).

Entry requirements

•Be registered as professional nurses or midwives on a live register
•Have a primary degree or higher in nursing or a related subject, or hold an equivalent qualification
•Provide evidence of continuing professional development
•RPL can be considered for applicants who do not have a level 8 qualification

•Academic Transcripts including date and grading of Degree award (non UCD only)
•Current photocopy of NMBI registration and pin
•Copy of Birth Certificate or Personal Pages of Passport (non UCD only)
•Professional Reference Form
•Evidence of proficiency in English language (applicants whose first language is not English)
