The MPH International programme in UCD has been developed to offer multi-disciplinary training and development in Public Health, emphasising the knowledge and tools to analyse the factors that influence public health in an international environment.

- Ability to work as an active team member in planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating health policy.

Course Description
Increasingly public health problems are global requiring global solutions and with the freer movement of people and human & animal foodstuffs infectious diseases, and contaminated product, can rapidly become widely disseminated.

The health of a country's citizens is often dependent on the controls and public health infrastructure in operation. International surveillance and early warning systems were never more important but the thresholds for accessing the health service and the efficacy of public health systems varies greatly.

Mortality and morbidity are not evenly distributed across societies and poorer people suffer poorer health. Infectious diseases, chronic diseases, obesity and protein energy malnutrition all have an international dimension. The disparity in the economic situation between countries, and between subpopulations within countries, grows ever wider as does the associated health status.

Many graduates from the MPH work in the international arena and this stream of the MPH, where the two international health modules are compulsory and the thesis will encompass an international health topic, should position them better for employment in this sphere.

Vision and Values Statement
The Master of Public Health (International Health) provides broad-based education and training in the basic disciplines which underlie the practice of Public Health, including disease epidemiology, research methods and statistics, international health, global health threats, health promotion, environmental health, sociology and health policy. The course provides the academic foundation for the practice of Public Health in an international context. The MPH (International Health) will specifically focus on health problems in low and middle income countries, including the promotion of health, prevention and treatment of disease, palliative care and rehabilitation and devising appropriate health delivery models. We value and therefore encourage out students to be active, motivated autonomous learners. The learning environment is multi-disciplinary in nature. Tutorials, seminars and group work are important features of the teaching approach. Assessment is by continuous assessment and end of semester examinations and a research thesis. Assessment approaches include written assignments, oral presentations (both group and individual), data analysis and written examinations.

Programme Outcomes:
Graduates will be able to identify and apply appropriate epidemiological methods for study design.

Graduates will be able to identify and apply appropriate statistical analysis to analyse a public health problem.

Graduates will be able to identify the factors contributing to morbidity and mortality in low and middle-income countries, to identify the challenges facing the achievement of the Millennium Developmental Goals and to formulate appropriate context-specific solutions to overcome them.

Graduates will be able to identify the occurrence and distribution of health and illness in populations analyse and to interpret health data to assess community needs and resources.

Graduates will demonstrate critical appraisal skills.

Graduates will demonstrate understanding of health promotion and disease prevention and the importance of advocacy as a public health professional.

Graduates will demonstrate understanding of the breadth of the role of public health in the health services.

This programme is intended for Graduates of Health Science degree programmes (Medicine, Dentistry, Public Health, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Nutrition, Nursing, or other), Science degree programmes (Biology, Biochemistry, Food Science, Physiology, Pharmacology, or other) or Social Science degree programmes (Psychology, Sociology, Economics, or other) preferably with a 2.1 Award or higher. Awards of 2:2 or less may be considered with additional suitability credentials. Applicants will be required to provide evidence of the highest level of mathematics achieved in prior education.

Applicants whose first language is not English must also demonstrate English language proficiency of IELTS 7.0 (no band less than 6.5 in each element), or equivalent.
