What is Simulation Science?

Every facet of the physical, biological, social, economic and engineering sciences is now critically dependent on insights gained from simulations of complex systems. Simulation is providing a radically new approach to Science addressing problems beyond the scope of traditional Experimental or Theoretical Science. Thus Simulation Science is central in enabling everything from developing new materials and new technologies for energy, information processing, and communication, to designing new medicines and treatments, and predicting how biological and social networks respond to different stimuli, from infections to financial crashes. The use and application of Simulation Science is critical to drive forward future innovations in the competitive environment of industry and scientific research; educating tomorrow's scientists requires that students acquire substantial depth in these techniques.

The Structured PhD Programme in Simulation Science is a new multi-institutional collaborative Ph.D. programme involving University College Dublin, Trinity College Dublin, Queen's University Belfast, the National University of Ireland, Galway, and supported by the Irish Centre for High End Computing.

The Programme was established in 2011 with the first cohort of students being funded by the Higher Education Authority (HEA) through the Programme for Research at Third Level Institutions, Cycle 5 (PRTLI-5) which is 50% co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
