What is change management?
The process of modernising processes provided by Dublin City Council, working across a variety of departments. There are a number of established projects, eight or nine large projects. One I’m leading on and the others I’m supporting on, so there is a lot of data capture, meeting frontline staff and identifying issues they have.
What skills do you need to be successful?
I’m meeting a lot of people form different backgrounds and different ages, so it’s really important to be a good two way communicator. Know how a local authority works and what their responsibilities are. Once in the role you should take any options to study.
What’s the best thing about your job?
DCC is the largest local council in Ireland and I’m in a unique position working with all the departments. I would have as close to a full picture as you could get. There’s a great synergy within the team I work with and the other departments.
How do you get into the public sector?
The recruitment process takes a while, up to a year or more. If you’re in University and see a position come up, I’d go for it. By the time you get through your interview, aptitude tests and background checks you might be finished.
