Your career pathway

Fiona O'Regan, International Sales & Marketing, Lakeland Dairies

What is your role at Lakeland Dairies and what does it involve?

I applied for the Lakeland Dairies Graduate Programme, and the great thing is that they can tailor the programme to suit your skills and strengths. So I was looking for something in sales and marketing, which I was lucky enough to get. What motivated me was working for an Irish company that makes an impact on a global scale. Lakeland does business throughout the world so it’s exactly what I want to be involved in. While my aim is to ultimately work in marketing, at the moment I’m in training so I’m working across a variety of departments; such as quality assurance, planning and purchasing.

How did you choose your career?

My degree was in International Commerce and Chinese, which included me spending a year in China. So, I wanted to work in an Irish company that is truly international, and is marketing an Irish product. That’s what makes an international graduate programme so exciting. The world is full of opportunities.

What skills do you need to be successful?

In terms of skills, they are quite broad for any graduate programme. Communications, teamwork, time management and leadership are things that are always important. To be successful in a graduate programme, a lot of it is down to your mind-set and your attitude towards your work. It’s so important to make use of the knowledge and experiences of those around you. I have a mentor in Lakeland who is there to teach me, and if you are enthusiastic and open-minded with your more experienced colleagues, they are more than happy to share their knowledge with you. I think it’s very important to go into graduate programmes with that attitude, because you are there to learn and a positive attitude goes a long way.
