What is your name, job title and employer?
I'm Martin Hewitt, a mechanical design engineer for a company called Viltra as part of the Co-Innovate graduate program.
What are the main tasks you do in your job in a normal week?
Viltra design water treatment systems for large scale and small scale domestic and industrial appliances such as factories on housing estates and even small scales in one house or two houses. In an average day in Viltra I'd be designing water treatment systems for a bespoke unique job or could be for a run-of-the-mill sort of job where we would have them on shelf ready to go.
What skills do you need to be successful in your role?
A lot of the skills I'd use in Viltra are AutoCAD, Microsoft packages such as Excel which would help you work out your flows and loads for the system or what you really require for ins and your outs. It gives you the ability to you know check how strong or sturdy your tank is such as FAF, a finite element analysis, you know that can tell you how strong your tank will be, if it buckle under pressure or withstand the forces of the water and then combined with the forces of perhaps soil or it's back fill.
What do you love about your job?
Viltra initially appealed to me because my degree is actually in clean technology engineering which is mechanical engineering with a bit of clean technologies so you know mechanical engineering of designing the tanks and then coming in to you how to treat the water as it comes in and then goes out you know it sort of nicely worked out well.
How did you get into your job?
Before I went to university, I was actually a mechanic so naturally you know engineering was for me. After graduation a friend of mine recommended having a look at the Graduate scheme and positions available from either InterTradeIreland (Career Boost) or Co-Innovate programs. After I seen the positions available, I immediately thought it would be a good idea for me matching my skill sets and my interests and also with my degree.
What is the number one skill students should develop if interested in this career?
To be successful in my role you need to the common skills that most people have such as communication. Communication skills are very important, you need to talk to your manager, the client, your colleagues who you work with.
