What does a normal week for you involve?

On a normal week I'm managing different projects, so I'm currently down in Abbott Vascular in Clonmel. This involves working with different suppliers in terms of products coming into the Plant, and these supplier teams are both Irish and international. My work involves making sure the technical aspects of any project are correct and then working with manufacturing and quality teams to make sure it's the right fit for what we need.

How did you get your job?

I studied Engineering in Trinity College Dublin and did a Masters in Mechanical Engineering and I applied for the position with Abbott through social media channels. So I think that shows the importance of making sure all your social media channels and profiles are up to date and relevant to employers.

What skills do you need to be successful in your role?

I think as an engineer, problem solving skills are what we would use on a daily basis. I think studying engineering provided me with a good basis to address problems. Another very important skill is teamwork as you're going to be working with a lot of different kinds of people.

What's the best thing about your job?

Well there's two things I really love about the job. Firstly, there is a lot of diversity in the role so when you're working on a graduate programme, Abbott invest a lot in you as you get to see different aspects of the company and what they do. Secondly, I definitely love working for a healthcare company, it's important to know you're helping people and giving something back.

What experiences helped build your skills?

I think one of the most important skills I acquired while in college was communication skills. Things like doing an internship, or doing team sports really helped me develop those skills.

What are your career ambitions?

After the Abbott graduate programme I'm really looking forward to moving into a project engineering role, which is what I enjoyed most throughout the different rotations.
