What is your name, job and employer?
I'm Keith Quigley, I'm a production planner and I work for IJM Timber Frame.
What are the main tasks you do in your job in a normal week?
As a production planner I look at our due dates and work backwards from that to plan our production schedule and liaise with the different departments so that we are up to scratch to meet those delivery dates. I liaise with dispatch, production, and design, and coordinate the overall workflow of the job.
What skills do you need to be successful in your job?
The skills I need on a day-to-day basis would be general problem-solving skills and people skills. I also work in some process improvement projects where I have to coordinate between different people, so my people management skills are crucial.
What do you love about your job?
My favourite thing about the job is being able to implement change and having that impact felt almost immediately and then being able to see the results of that and getting the appreciation for it.
How did you get into your job?
I did an undergrad in the University of Limerick in wood science and technology. From there I got into project management and construction, mainly working with timber frame construction, so I understood the build process. Then this opportunity arose through InterTradeIreland.
What is the number one skill students should develop if interested in this career?
My advice would be to work on people management skills, constantly working in a team environment and learning the different dynamics of a team.
