I’m a point of contact for Irish seafood companies looking to access Bord Bia’s services. Within my role I work in market research, looking at business development with smaller companies who might be looking to export for the first time perhaps. I help provide them with the information they need to make informed decisions about who they’re selling their product to and what to expect from those markets.
What skills do you need to be successful?
A broad knowledge base that you can pick and choose from to inspire you to approach things from a different angle and give you ideas that may not be evident to another person. It’s important to my role to be able to make those connections between disparate projects.
Do you have any advice for students?
Don’t concentrate solely on business and marketing classes. If I could go back now I would take modules in sociology or history, something that will help you learn how people react and think. Having a background in anthropology, sociology or gender studies will give you an advantage in dealing with clients and give your product that little boost it needs.
What’s the best thing about your job?
It’s a really nice area to work in. People are very passionate about what they do, and always very kind and welcoming. I’d like to travel to other cultures to see what they’re doing in food marketing. Everybody eats, so I can go anywhere in this role, and that’s an exciting prospect.
