Local Authorities Ireland
The Local Government sector in Ireland is made up of 31 Local Authorities and three Regional Assemblies. Local Authorities are the closest and most accessible form of Government to citizens. They have responsibility for delivery of a wide range of services in their local area with a focus on making cities, towns and countryside attractive places to live, work and invest. These services generally include housing; planning; infrastructure; environmental protection; and the provision of recreation and amenities and community infrastructure. Local Authorities also play a key role in supporting economic development and enterprise at a local level.
As the business, economic and social environment becomes more complex and demanding, there is an increasing need to ensure that a wider range of skills is available within each Local Authority. The sector is looking for people with the potential to take on responsibilities for the delivery of public services and analysis of public policy issues to joining their 3 year Graduate Development Programme.
Local government is committed to recruiting the best graduates and developing them to become a driver of change. Graduates will be recruited, assigned to teams and assigned a mixture of group, team and individuals tasks including a limited amount of day to day transactional activity in order to develop their understanding of the work the local authority is engaged in. Over time it is expected that Graduates will as they show their abilities be assigned more responsibility for certain tasks and or be assigned the delivery of certain outputs that their team is required to deliver.
The Local Government Management Agency (LGMA) has been tasked with organising the Graduate recruitment programme on behalf of the local government sector. The initial intake will be individuals who have recently graduated in a field of study which is directly relevant to one of the following seven skills areas,
- Economic Enterprise and Business Development
- Project and Programme Management
- Innovation Strategy and Change Management
- HR Management
- Communications and Marketing
- Data Analytics and Data Metrics
- Climate Action
