Founded by Stephen A. Schwarzman and the President of Tsinghua University, Schwarzman Scholars is a fully-funded, one year Master’s degree program in Beijing, China. The mission of the program is to build a global network of dynamic young leaders who throughout their careers can deepen understanding between China and the rest of the world. Schwarzman Scholars givesthe world’s brightest young leaders the opportunity to develop their understanding of China, hone their leadership skills, and broaden their professional networks. Immersed in an international community of thinkers, innovators, and senior leaders in business, politics, and society, scholars participate in intellectual engagement, professional development, and cultural exchange.
Upon completion of the program, students receive a Master’s degree in Global Affairs, awarded by Tsinghua University in Beijing. Early in the academic year, all Schwarzman Scholars share a core curriculum anchored in leadership, global affairs, and China. Scholars can choose elective courses from a variety of academic disciplines, mainly but not exclusively drawn from the fields of economics, public policy, and international relations, some with a specific or comparative focus on China. Scholars can focus their electives in one of the fields if desired.
Coursework is taught by leading faculty from Tsinghua University and around the globe. The students will spend 60—70% of their time on classroom based learning. The academic program has an experiential component and includes a Deep Dive trip to cities in other parts of China, as well as a number of leadership development and professional training opportunities. The final Capstone project encourages students to integrate learning from the experiential and academic aspects of the Schwarzman Scholars experience.
Schwarzman Scholars prepares young leaders who, through their future influence at the head of major organizations and businesses, will connect China and the rest of the world throughout their careers. To contribute to that mission, we believe leaders must draw energy from their own vision, drive, and values and at the same time exercise strong intercultural understanding, interpersonal skills, and the ability to work alongside and inspire others with different values.
Our leadership programming helps Scholars explore and articulate their vision and values through a year-long series of reflection exercises, initiated through a workshop developed in partnership with the Rhodes Trust. Core course offerings on leadership provide students with theoretical and case-study contexts of leadership in different professional settings and cultures. A series of skills-oriented workshops develop their interpersonal capacities, for example in public speaking, negotiating, or team management. Scholars also interact with current leaders who serve as models of leadership through a speakers series and a mentorship program.
Schwarzman Scholars selects up to 150 young leaders each year through a rigorous selection process designed to evaluate leadership experience and potential, intellectual and academic ability, and strength of character.
Qualified candidates must:
- Demonstrate English fluency
- Be between 18 and 28 years old
- Possess an undergraduate degree by the time of enrollment
With each cycle, Schwarzman Scholars receives more than 4,000 applications, which the admissions committee and an international network of distinguished readers evaluates.
