My route to William Fry took a little longer than usual. Having gone to high school in Malaysia I had always been interested in travel and studying abroad. I returned to Ireland to complete my BCL International in UCC after which I went to Philadelphia in the United States for my LLM.
After my masters I took some time out to do different things - I trained as a yoga teacher in India and spent a few years teaching in Cork, Goa, the Himalayas and eventually back in Malaysia. I also gained experience with the EU Malaysia Chamber of Commerce and Industry and with a commercial litigation and dispute resolution firm in Kuala Lumpur.
I chose William Fry because I was looking for a career that was challenging and exciting and which also encouraged activities beyond the office. It has exceeded my expectations in this regard. The culture of the firm is apparent from both the drinks reception and the interview process - which I found to be positive, supportive and structured in such a way as to bring out the best in candidates. I am delighted to have found the training program to be structured similarly.
Moving back to Dublin having spent most of my life abroad was challenging and William Fry could not have made that transition any easier. My first rotation was in the corporate department which was an invaluable training experience. It was fast paced and energetic and as a trainee you get the opportunity to work directly with partners on high profile transactions.
I am now in my second rotation in the property department where no two days are the same. The work is interesting and challenging and comes with a significant level of responsibility attached which allows trainees to make a meaningful contribution to transactions.
Aside from the office there are always plenty of social events and sports events being held – there really is something for everyone from charity runs and tennis to trips away. The firm gym is also great and has fitness classes during the weekdays. I am delighted that I have been able to maintain a healthy work life balance during my time here.
