Starting out as a graduate consultant at a company as reputable and prevalent as AECOM was intimidating, yet exciting. I knew that working for a company so culturally present and in-touch with it’s key values would be a fantastic opportunity to broaden my knowledge of the construction industry and work on major iconic projects across Ireland and the UK. From day one I was given direction, advice and guidance as I was involved in a number of schemes both in the public and private sector.
In one of my first roles with the development team, I provided technical support for the planning approval of an 8 storey student residential development in Dublin City Centre. Given the present shortage of affordable student accommodation in Dublin it was really gratifying to hear that this project received positive feedback on the planning approval. My career since then has seen my involvement in a wide range of major development projects across Ireland such as data centres, national road infrastructure upgrades, racecourse redevelopments, office buildings, residential housing and retail developments. Our team has a high turnover of projects so the work is fast-paced and ever changing.
There are plenty of opportunities to gain on-site experience through site visits but the majority of my time is spent in our new Dun Laoghaire office. The open floor plan is a dynamic environment where senior managers and junior staff members sit side by side. This is a real advantage for graduates as it allows you to draw upon the knowledge and experience of established employees. Working next to highly skilled professionals with years of experience has allowed me to hone skills that are not traditionally part of an engineering background; such as public speaking, negotiation, report writing and team management. Our team’s close working relationship has allowed me the opportunity to improve many necessary skills to enhance my career path.
AECOM’s investment in training for graduates is second to none. CPD seminars, training courses and one-to-one advisory sessions are continually available and strongly promoted. As a graduate engineer, working for AECOM, I am always encouraged and supported by my colleagues in achieving the accredited title of “chartered engineer”. At this early stage of my career I really appreciate the opportunities that have been afforded to me to be employed by such a professional company, working in most pleasant surroundings in a fast paced environment with great work satisfaction.
