Graduate Jobs / Graduate Profiles

My name is Michael Redmond. I graduated from University College Dublin in 2014 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Masters in Mechanical Engineering with Business.

I spent six months of my masters working as an intern in AbbVie Manorhamilton. AbbVie is a global, research-based biopharmaceutical company. The company is spread across five sites in Ireland. Alongside three manufacturing facilities in Sligo and Cork, two offices in Dublin serve the needs of the company’s Commercial and Operations activities.

During my internship, I worked in the Engineering Department on a global project. I joined the Operations Development Programme (ODP) in 2014 after completing my masters. I was attracted to the diversity and global reach of the programme. It consists of three eight-month rotations in different areas of the company, two within my engineering track and one rotation outside engineering. This gives you the opportunity to gain vast amounts of experience in more than one discipline and also gives you the opportunity to do a global rotation.

My first assignment was a Reliability and Project Engineer at AbbVie Cork, which is a pharmaceutical site. My role involved managing continuous improvement projects which saved costs, improved performance and led to increased process reliability.

My second assignment was in AbbVie Ballytivnan, our medical devices site in Sligo. I worked as a project manager and lead of the ISO 50001 certification programme. This was a site wide energy project which resulted in significant saving for the site and provided me with the opportunity to work with many cross functional teams.

For my elective rotation I chose a role in supply chain. I am currently working in our Chicago global operations headquarters a brand manager for the international  launch of one of our new products. It has been an incredible experience to date.

What I like most about the ODP is that the programme is what you make  it. If you show initiative and perform well, you are given the chance to work on more challenging and rewarding projects. AbbVie is committed to its young and driven employees, and will always seek to provide you with the experience and training you need to progress your career.
