I’m Cian Ryan, 22. And a University of Limerick, Accounting and Finance graduate. I chose JPA Brenson Lawlor as I felt I’d get the widest experience with a medium sized firm. The training varies with Brenson Lawlor and, unlike some of the larger firms, you’re not stuck in just one department during your training contract. I’ve already been working on a wide variety of tasks including audit and accounting work for clients, with completed work including working paper updates, GPS/DMS updates, F45 updates and more (don’t worry, they’re really good at explaining all this!). I’m currently undertaking an on-site audit and beginning to understand the importance of checking and putting together the relevant information needed in each of the necessary files.

The support within the office is great and I’ll always be shown where the relevant information for each of the tasks is found. The firm works very closely with their beginners – and provide compulsory training days on audit testing, disclosure checklists and CCH (company software). All of this makes the work easier and I’m looking forward to completing more on-site audits. The firm also provides a great social scene which includes nights out and some sports-related activities (we’ve just won the Tag Rugby league, Whoop!). I’ve also been enrolled with Chartered Accountants Ireland and will be undertaking some CAP two exams come next year.
