Innovative Manufacturing Research

Regions that can successfully implement innovative manufacturing provide jobs and economic growth, which directly translates to a better quality of life and standard of living. The research which the School undertakes is relevant and valuable to a broad range of Irish manufacturing sectors.

Our research expertise in this area includes:

•Laser surface modification of material surfaces for bespoke applications.

•Implementation of novel microfluidic systems for detection of chemical or biological species.

•Additive manufacturing technologies.

•Semi-solid metal forming.

•Optimising semiconductor manufacturing using simulation.

•Assessing impact of bottlenecks and variable demand on design of efficient lean production control strategies.

•Supply chain optimisation for test wafers in semiconductor manufacturing.

•Flow visualisation studies of pharmaceutical and semi-conductor pipe tees.

Biomedical Engineering Research

Biomedical Engineering research is an interdisciplinary activity which innovates at the boundaries of engineering and biomedical sciences to address unmet clinical needs.

Our research expertise in this area includes:

•Cardiovascular biomechanics and intravascular medical device design.

•Biomaterials (vascular, orthopaedic, wound-care).

•Implant coating technologies.

•Biomechanics of orthopaedic implants.

•Novel surgical device technology.

Sustainable Engineering

The School is actively involved in research into sustainable technology including the treatment of drinking water and waste water, and the management of water and waste water infrastructure.

Our research expertise in this area includes:

•Computational modelling of hydrodynamics of ocean wave energy converters.

•Development of three dimensional two-fluid flow codes.

•Efficient design of pump systems.

•Work on efficient and parallel solution algorithm.

•Computational modelling of solar thermal collector.

•Development of numerical codes for modelling of heat transfer in two-fluid flow.

•Extension of code two model phase change and simulate boiling process.
