Conversion Programme:
Introduction
This part-time programme provides an opportunity for non-quantity surveying graduates to become educated for a career in the construction industry in quantity surveying/construction economics in Ireland and abroad. It has been developed as an alternative route into the quantity surveying profession other than by way of the traditional honours undergraduate degree. The programme is presented within the School of Real Estate and Construction Economics in the College of Engineering and Built Environment in DIT. The total intake of students each year will be approx. 20-25 students from different disciplines and backgrounds. The content of the programme, delivered over 2.5 years (5 Semesters) includes subjects pertinent to the practice of Quantity Surveyors and construction economics professionals. The programme’s focus is strongly oriented towards quantity surveying practice, building measurement, the management and economics of development.

In these new turbulent times the issue of controlling and managing costs within the construction industry is of paramount importance to any private of public sector client.

Semesters 1 and 2 of the programme are designed to build rapidly the foundations required to develop the distinctive skills of the quantity surveying professional. The core modules are: Construction Technology; Quantity Surveying Practice and Building Measurement aim to develop the building blocks and techniques together with developing specialist knowledge of the nature of the industry and the professions that surrounds the built environment.

From the beginning of the third Semester, students apply the principles of Construction Economics and Project Management. Students will have the option in this semester to build on their knowledge of Building Measurement or gain a greater insight into Project Cost and Financial Control. In Semester 4 students gain a more detailed understanding of the legal framework in which construction work operates. They also undertake a major Development Project that seeks to integrate the learning from earlier modules. The Semester will also give the students the option to select either a Professional Practice module or a Commercial Surveying Module.

In order to complete Semester 5 and the entire programme, students will have to undertake the completion of a Dissertation or Group Company Project.

Entry requirements

In order to be admitted to the course, students must have an honours (2.2 grade or higher) in a level 8 bachelor degree or equivalent and be working in a suitable construction related environment. All applications that do not meet the minimum entry requirements will be reviewed and may be called for interview in late April. Selection will be made, following interview, using the following criteria:

Academic achievement
Relevant employment experience
Evidence of commitment to a career in Quantity Surveying
Interest in and critical awareness of role of the Quantity Surveyor and
Evidence of interest in postgraduate construction research

Preference will be given to those students who possess the minimum entry requirements. It will not be necessary to interview these applicants.

Duration

2.5 years part-time

Lectures take place on a Monday and Wednesday evening for a total of 6 hours per week.

The programme has full accreditation from the Society of Chartered Surveyors and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

Qualification Awarded:
The Dublin Institute of Technology’s degree of MSc in Quantity Surveying will be awarded to participants who successfully pass the formal examinations and assessments of the programme including the dissertation or group company project.

Assessment method

The programme is assessed through a range of techniques including: project work, group work, assignments, presentations and examinations. Assessments in the form of examinations will normally take place at the end of the respective semesters in January and May, with supplemental examinations in September. In addition, students will be expected to complete a dissertation.

Students can only progress from one academic year to the next providing all the required assessments in the pre-requisite modules have been passed.
