Building Information Modelling & Management - Applied

Introduction
The programme aims to provide an educational setting in which to develop the ability to initiate and lead the holistic and integrated process of design, construction, and life-cycle management through the medium of BIM, centred on the collaborative and multi-disciplinary building design process. It will provide experienced built environment professionals and recent Level 8 graduates with an additional skill set centred on Building Information Modelling & Management, which will enable employment as BIM professionals in building design practices and the construction industry.

This is a multidisciplinary specialisation programme to enable graduates of a range of Engineering and Built Environment disciplines to acquire a qualification in applied Building Information Modelling & Management at Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma and Masters levels. The programme is managed in the School of Multidisciplinary Technologies (SMDT) but is delivered by the complete range of domain-specific BIM experts from across the schools of the College of Engineering and Built Environment. An intake of 60 students across the disciplines of architecture, engineering, surveying (quantity and geomatics), architectural technology, construction management and facilities management is planned, thus creating an industry-replicating, multidisciplinary environment.

Who Should Apply?
The programme is open to graduates of building design and construction-related programmes, including architects, engineers, surveyors (quantity, geomatics and property), architectural technologists, construction managers and facilities managers. Graduates of related discipline areas with appropriate experience are encouraged to apply.

Programme Content
Domain Specific Streams (15 credits)

BIM Architecture: 1 Primary Building Elements; 2 Secondary Building Elements; 3 Tertiary Building Elements

BIM Surveying & Construction Management: 1 Introduction to BIM for Construction Managers; 2 Introduction to BIM for Cost and Value Management; 3: Advanced BIM for Construction and Project Management

BIM Mechanical & Electrical Engineering: 1 & 2 Mechanical & Electrical; 3 Appraisal & Validation of Dynamic Simulation Modelling (DSM)

BIM Geomatics Engineering: 1 Point Cloud Science; 2 Systems and Practise 2; 3 Scan2BIM2Field.

Programme Delivery
There will be a varied and flexible delivery of the programme including lectures, tutorials, laboratory work, project work, e-learning, problem-based learning, guest lectures, seminars, etc. Students are expected to actively contribute to their own learning and the use of online access to software outside of scheduled class times is essential.

Who Should Apply?

The programme is open to graduates of building design and construction-related programmes, including architects, engineers, surveyors (quantity, geomatics and property), architectural technologists, construction managers and facilities managers. Graduates of related discipline areas with appropriate experience are encouraged to apply.

Entry Requirements:
An NFQ level 8 Bachelor Degree with 2.2 award or equivalent, or a level 7 ordinary degree plus 5 years relevant experience. Applicants are required to produce evidence of the minimum English language proficiency requirement for overseas applicants i.e. a minimum score of 6.0 in IELTS or equivalent.

Duration

Part-time: The programme is delivered over five 15-week phases with a total duration of two and a half years.

Calendar - Part-time mode

Year One:
September to December: Three sequential, stream specific modules – two evenings per week (18:00-21:00, days tbc)

January to May: Two modules delivered in 4-week contact blocks; one module delivered distributed over the full semester – two evenings per week (18:00-21:00, days tbc)

Year Two:
September to December: One module delivered online; one module delivered over 8-week contact block – two evenings per week (18:00-21:00, days tbc)

January to May: One module delivered for 12 contact weeks; one module delivered over 8 weeks – two evenings per week (18:00-21:00, days tbc)

June to October or September to December: Capstone Experience.

Timetable / Hours
In part-time mode, contact hours will be scheduled for two evenings (exact days tbc) per week from 18:00-21:00. Students are expected to complete the self-learning hours required of each module, during the timetabled period, through individual and team-based activities facilitated by the online, collaborative resources provided by the programme committee.

Career Opportunities
The MSc in Applied Building Information Modelling and Management is a unique NFQ level 9 programme in Ireland and the approach to MSc-level education is distinctive in relation to programmes available internationally. The demand for professionals skilled in the application of Building Information Modelling technologies and for the management of Building Information Modelling processes is very strong both nationally and internationally. It underpins the needs of a wide range of disciplines in the Built Environment and Engineering for professionals skilled in collaborative design, build, and management processes. It is expected that graduates of the programme will find employment both within their own disciplines and in emerging collaborative careers as BIM processes become more widely adopted.

Qualification Awarded:
An MSc in Applied Building Information Modelling & Management from the Dublin Institute of Technology will be awarded to participants who also successfully pass the capstone experience after completion of the taught elements of the programme. Students who do not wish to, or are unable to, complete the research skills and capstone experience modules, having completed all of the taught modules, are eligible for the award of Postgraduate Diploma in Collaborative BIM.

Students who do not wish to, or are unable to, complete morethan the first 30 credits of taught modules of the programme are eligible for the award of Postgraduate Certificate in BIM Technologies. Students who exit with the Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate awards may apply to return and complete further stages of the programme in a subsequent academic year, subject to availability and the return of the award documentation.

Assessment method

The programme is assessed through a range of techniques including: project work, team work, individual assignments, reflective writing, and oral and studio-style presentations. In addition, students of the MSc will be expected to complete a capstone experience.
