Tourism Management

Introduction

Please note due to the great demand for our programmes early applications are assessed when received and dealt with promptly. Therefore it is advisable to make early applications for an early response. If you do not yet have your final degree results this will not hinder your application as we are happy to issue conditional offer letters in such circumstances.

Conversion Programme

The programme is aimed at both professionals currently employed within the tourism industry and those from complementary backgrounds who wish to enter the tourism field. In this context it may be of particular interest to people coming from a heritage, languages, geography, marketing or business background.

This programme aims to equip participants with the necessary expertise to manage, co-ordinate and develop tourism businesses and projects in Ireland and abroad. It is aimed at both professionals currently employed within the tourism industry and those from related fields. This dynamic programme encourages interaction between academics and industry practitioners from the national and international tourism sector.

Entry requirements

Applicants should possess a bachelor degree at honours level (2.2 grade or higher) or equivalent. In addition, applicants may be required to complete an admission interview.

Applicants whose first language is not English also need to provide evidence of their English language proficiency (6.0 or above in the IELTS test).

Note: Due to the considerable competition for our postgraduate programmes satisfying the minimum entry requirement is not a guarantee of a place. Depending on the programme of study applications will be assessed based on candidates’ academic grades and may also take into account applicants’ work/life experience. The DIT recognises both REL and RPL. Applicants may also be required to attend for interview for specific programmes.

Duration

Part Time - 2 Years, 3 days per week or on a modular basis

The full time programme involves three days of lectures (14 hours) per week. Please note all lectures are delivered during the day (9 – 8 pm). Some content may also be delivered as a teaching block and / or in a blended learning format. Modules will be available as CPD modules. In addition to lectures students will undertake significant self-directed learning and research. The programme also includes a Masters Induction week to introduce you to DIT and to prepare you for learning at Masters level.

There are several options to complete the programme part time. Essentially, you will be completing the programme on a module by module basis. That is, there will be one module delivered per day and depending on the timetable and your availability you can select the module(s) you wish to take. Therefore, you can complete the programme in your own time and at a pace that suits you provided you complete all required credits within a five-year timeframe. You can also complete the programme in two years by taking three modules per academic year for two years plus the dissertation.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of this programme have found employment in a wide range of positions within and outside the industry, nationally and internationally. Career paths include management positions in the travel sector, tour operators, international, national and regional tourism organisations, tourist attractions, hospitality businesses, community development, cultural organisations, cooperative marketing groups, support agencies and local authorities. There are also opportunities for graduates in research, teaching and consultancy.

Award

Graduates of the programme are eligible for the award of Masters Degree in Tourism Management (M.Sc. in Tourism Management) of the Dublin Institute of Technology.

Students may also apply for an exit award after completing a third or two-thirds of the programme successfully. If students decide to exit the programme they may receive a postgraduate certificate or a postgraduate diploma respectively.

The programme is assessed through a range of methods including: project work; group work, assignments; presentations and terminal examinations.
