About the course
The programme seeks to provide graduates with the skills necessary to enable them to find employment in the I.T. sector or to proceed to obtaining higher qualifications in computing. The programme learning outcomes are in accordance with those outlined by QQI for Level 9 qualifications.
The aims of the programme are to:
Prepare graduates who can competently embrace the many complex and integrated analytical, technical and design aspects of computing science with a particular focus on cloud computing
Prepare learners who can develop robust and efficient practical cloud solutions that are secure and scale up with resources efficiently
Prepare graduates who can identify, advance and exploit opportunities as they emerge in the design, development and advancement cloud applications
Deepen significantly the learners practical and theoretical knowledge of many interrelated areas of computing: algorithm design, concurrent, parallel and distributed computing, networking, security, etc
Significantly extend the graduates knowledge and understanding of the specialist area of cloud computing as directly related to the principles and practices of software applications development
Extend the learners in-depth knowledge, understanding and practical skills in meeting the specific technical and design requirements of exacting industry standards as they emerge
Develop the skills necessary to do independent research in a professional manner
Prepare graduates who can critically assess and reflect on the major challenges in cloud computing and suggest ways in which they might be addressed
Develop learners who can rigorously apply appropriate research, design and implementation methodologies in their development of cloud applications
Prepare learners who can reliably perform a range of distinct roles within group based project teams by establishing effective collaborative working relations with colleagues to achieve common goals.
The programme contains eight taught modules and a final Dissertation/Dissertation by Practice. Four modules are taught per semester so students complete eight taught modules over two semesters and then complete a project over a period of twelve weeks. The overall programme is one calendar year long. The learners who start in September, complete taught modules by the following May and complete their projects over the summer, thus completing the entire programme within one calendar year.
