Business & Humanities - Research

The Business and Humanities Research Centre is primarily focused on SME applied research and applied social studies.

Research activity in the Faculty of Business & Humanities has developed considerably over the past five years. The School has developed applied research in business, early childhood, youth and social care, teaching and learning and sports marketing and performance analysis.

Entry requirements

Research Masters
At IT Carlow we offer you the chance to achieve two types of Research Postgraduate Qualifications.
• Degree of Master (Research)
• Degree of Doctor of Philosophy

Degree of Master (Research)
Candidates for the Degree of Master (Research) will be expected to meet the standard for the relevant broad field of learning (Science, Computing, Engineering, Business, Art and Design defined for awards at Level 9 on the NFQ.

Learning outcomes at this level relate to the demonstration of knowledge and understanding which is the forefront of a field of learning. The outcomes relate to the application of knowledge, understanding and problem solving abilities in new or unfamiliar contexts related to the field of study. The outcomes are associated with an ability to integrate knowledge, handle complexity and formulate judgements. Outcomes associated with Level 9 would link with employment as a senior professional or manager with responsibility for the work outputs of teams.

Normally, the minimum duration of studies leading to the Degree of Master (Research) is 21 months (two academic years) from the date of admission to the Master's Register.

Degree of Doctor of Philosophy
Candidates for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy will be expected to meet the standard for the relevant broad field of learning defined for awards at level 10 on the NFQ.

Learning outcomes at this level relate to the discovery and development of new knowledge and skills and delivering findings at the frontiers of knowledge and application. Further outcomes at this level relate to specialist skills and transferable skills required for managing, such as the abilities to critique and develop organisational structure and initiate change.

Normally, the minimum duration of studies leading to the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy is 3 academic years from the date of admission to the register.

Duration

The average duration of a research Masters degree (NFQ Level 9) is 2 years full-time study. A PhD (NFQ Level 10) should take from 3 to 4 years (full-time) to complete.

Some examples of recent research undertaken include:
• Physical activity provision and support within pre-school settings in the South East of Ireland;
• Evaluating the potential for collaborative approaches to working capital management to strengthen supply chain performance;
• The impact of the role of the supervisor in averting and/or managing the effects of vicarious trauma among social care staff;
• Representations of youth and young people in the media in Ireland.
