Computing - Online

The Higher Diploma in Computing is a nationwide initiative which aims to re-train graduates with backgrounds in disciplines other than computing and give them the skills they need to pursue a career in an IT related field. The programme's ambition is to give the students practical experience in core areas of IT. The work placement is a vital element of this programme. It gives the students the opportunity to practice their new acquired skills and also the confidence they need to start their new career.

Entry requirements

Students interested in this programme should have completed a Level 8 qualification in an area other than Computing. Applicants may be asked to attend for interview and/or assessment to determine their suitability for the programme.


1 years full-time online, including a work placement. The work placement may extend beyond 3 months in which case the duration of the programme will extend beyond1 calendar year.

Number of credits


Careers or further progression

On successful completion of the programme graduates can pursue a career in any one of the following fields: object oriented software development, database design and development, systems analysis, testing and project management, web application and user interface design, architectures, networking and virtualisation.

Course fee

None. This programme is funded under the HEA's ICT Skills Programme and as such fees are waived for successful applicants.

Springboard Fees
Unemployed participants are fully funded by Springboard.
Employed participants pay 10% of the fees €750.

This programme is funded under the Springboard initiative and provides free fees for this programme under this initiative. Unemployed applicants must complete this programme over one year. Employed applicants have the option of completing this programme over one or two years.
