Youthwork - Technology Enhanced Youth Work

The overall objective is to equip youth workers with skills and analytical capabilities in the use of digital media in youth work. This course will be informed by an understanding of youth work principals and practice.

Entry requirements

Candidates must be actively involved in youth work either as a volunteer or a paid employee working at least 5 hours per week with a registered youth work organisation or project. Candidates will need to have demonstrated an adequate level of English, for example IELTS 5.5.


The programme is delivered over two Semesters.

Number of Weeks: 30

Online Lectures: There will be online lectures and reading material provided to be accessed over 2 evenings per week, the content will take approximately 3 hours per session to complete. The time that these sessions can be accessed will be at the discretion of the student

Seminar: There will be one seminar each semester at the LIT Thurles Campus, at which all students will be expected to attend.

Webinar: Each month there will be a 3 hour Webinar. Workplace Learning: Students will be expected to spend a minimum of 5 hours per week working/ volunteering in a youth work setting.

Subjects taught

Students will complete the modules on Critical Youth Work Theory after which they will undertake the modules in Technology Enhanced Youth Work.

Certificate in Technology Enhanced Youth Work (Special Purpose Award, Level 9, 30 Credits)

Location: Online Delivery with one seminar each
month at the LIT Thurles Campus

Assessment method

There will be a cross modular project for each block constituting 40% marks for each module. The subject of this will be agreed with the host youth organisation. There will be an essay or project for each module worth 40%. Students will complete a series of online questions based on the lectures which will count for 20% of the module mark.

Course fee


Fees for programmes offered through Flexible Learning differ from programme to programme. Check the details in the handbook. In some cases particular criteria apply in terms of fee payments.

If you wish to pay by cheque, bank draft or postal order, please make payable to Limerick Institute of Technology and submit with your completed registration form to the Department of Flexible Learning.

Payment by credit or debit card is possible at any time during office opening hours either in person or by telephone. If you are registering by post and wish to pay by credit or debit card, simply tick the relevant box and a member of the Flexible Learning team will contact you to take the payment by telephone.

Where fees are being paid by an employer or other third party, a sponsorship agreement must be completed by the student and employer and issued to LIT. Invoices will only be issued to employers/third parties when this is completed.

Payment of programme fees must be received from the employer prior to commencement of the programme. In the event that invoices have not been paid prior to the commencement of a programme, the student will be required to pay the fee and subsequently claim it back from his/her employer.

Please note that for security reasons, we are unable to accept cash payments.

All programme fees must be paid in full before the commencement of a programme, unless otherwise indicated. Receipts will be issued to students or employer/third party upon payment of fees. Students should retain receipts as charges may apply for issuing copies, and in some cases reissuing will not be possible.
