Education - School Guidance Counselling

The MEd School Guidance Counselling degree is designed to advance the professional development of school Guidance Counsellors and builds on the Postgraduate Diploma in School Guidance Counselling (PGDSGC). This one year programme involves participation in regular research-support seminars and consultation with supervisors towards the completion of a thesis.

Entry requirements

Entry is restricted to applicants who have successfully completed all courses in the one-year Postgraduate Diploma in School Guidance and Counselling (PGDSGC) or equivalent, with a grade of at least Second Class Honours, grade 1 standard. Applicants are expected to submit a thesis proposal of no less than 2,500 words that identifies a research issue, situates the problem in scholarly literature(s), and proposes a plan of research. Applicants must have a recognised primary degree which is considered equivalent to Irish university primary degree level.

•PTE (Pearson): 62

This MEd SGC builds on the PGDSGC (Post Graduate Diploma in School Guidance Counselling) and aims to advance school-based Guidance Counsellors' professional development. The programme is recognised by the Department of Education and Skills and the National Centre for Guidance in Education as a professional, international qualification in Guidance Counselling.

Course fee

In general, there are two levels of fees payable. EU students from EU countries including Ireland pay a subsidised level of fees for both taught courses and research programmes. Tuition fees for students from outside the EU are not subsidised and are thus somewhat higher than for EU students.
