The Postgraduate Diploma in Spanish and Latin American Studies aims to provide students who already have a background in Spanish Studies at undergraduate level with an opportunity to develop their interest in and knowledge and understanding of the language, literatures and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. As well as increased linguistic and intercultural competence, the programme also offers students the opportunity to develop their awareness of a variety of theoretical approaches to critical analysis; to broaden their intellectual experience; to improve their intercultural and communication skills; and to develop their transferable skills, such as research skills, presentation skills, teamwork, organization skills and time management.

Entry requirements

BA in Spanish (with at least II.1 Honours degree), or equivalent. Applicants must have a recognised primary degree which is considered equivalent to Irish university primary degree level.

Minimum English language requirements: please visit Maynooth University International Office website for information about English language tests accepted and required scores. The requirements specified are applicable for both EU and non-EU applicants.

Careers or further progression

The Postgraduate Diploma in Spanish Studies equips students for a number of career paths. These include: teaching at various levels, school management, business, politics, publishing, materials' development, translation, adult education and support, further study at MA, MLitt or PhD level.

Subjects taught

The structure of the Postgraduate Diploma (Level 9) in Spanish & Latin American Studies is very similar to the MA in Spanish & Latin American Studies. However, it is awarded after completing 60 credits of taught modules, whereas the MA is awarded after completing 90 credits of taught modules and the MA thesis (30 credits).
