Who is this course for?
Secondary school teachers who wish to upskill in order to teach Politics and Society on the Leaving Certificate Curriculum and for those wishing to pursue further studies in this area for professional development reasons.

Course Profile
This course is specifically designed to meet the needs of teachers who wish to teach Politics and Society on the Leaving Certificate Curriculum. The course content is tailored to correspond with the four strands of learning on the Politics and Society curriculum, therefore providing students with the skills, knowledge, learning and teaching methodologies required to engage with this discipline.

Entry requirements

Applicants wishing to undertake the course for the purposes of teaching must have competed a level 8 honours degree in order to meet Teaching Council requirements. Other applicants must have completed a level 7 Diploma or higher qualification.

Subjects taught

The course covers a broad range of subject matter within the Disciplines of Political Science and Sociology, but focuses specifically on: Power and Decision Making, Active Citizenship, Human Rights and Globalisation and Localisation. The course is delivered in a blended learning format combining face-to-face seminars with online study throughout the academic year.

Assessment method

Assessments will consist of a combination of written assignments and online exercises and activities.

The closing dates for each course varies, but are typically from mid-July to late August each academic year.

Application Procedure
You complete an application form online by logging onto apply.

On the online application form, you provide your contact details, and outline your educational background, any previous courses undertaken and any additional information that may be required to assess your suitability for the course for which you are applying. You will also be required to upload a copy of your birth certificate or passport and the course application fee (non-refundable), which is around €30.

Consult the course information page in the prospectus for details on closing dates and make sure that you adhere to these dates. The process of assessing applications and offering places may take between four and six weeks. Additional registration details and communication from the relevant department will be issued to you approximately two weeks before the course commences, informing you of the registration date and lecture times for the course.

Online application to the course will open in late June 2018.
