Business Studies

Who is this course for?
The Higher Diploma in Business Studies is aimed at those who have completed a level 8 degree in a non-business discipline and want to obtain a business qualification. This course is ideal for those interested in businessrelated subjects, who are curious about how firms, markets and economies operate. The Higher Diploma in Business Studies can provide you with the theory and skills required to realise your career goals in a business-related environment.

Course Profile
• Provide students with an opportunity to develop the fundamental skills of business administration;

• To equip students with the concepts, skills and knowledge necessary to play an active role in the management and development of business enterprises;

• Provide non-business graduates with a pathway to progress to level 9 postgraduate studies in business.

Students will study a range of business modules delivered by the following core business disciplines: Accountancy and Finance, Business Information Systems, Business Law, Economics, Marketing and Management. All modules assume no previous knowledge of the subject areas.

Entry requirements

Applicants require a Level 8 honours degree of H2.2 standard or above. This course is open to graduates of any discipline who wish to acquire a grounding in business practices.

Applicants aged 21 or over by January 1st of the year of admission are classified as mature students and are eligible to apply on this basis. Note that some courses have special entry requirements, please refer to the relevant diploma page.

Proficiency in the use of computers and the internet is beneficial, and in the case of online courses in particular is recommended.

English Language Requirement
If your first language is not English, or you have not been educated through the medium of the English language, you are required to present an English language qualification (IELTS/TOEFL). The English language requirement does not apply to the language diplomas.

Graduates can progress in a diverse range of industries, such as marketing, financial services, information systems and human resources. Graduates can also pursue further postgraduate study at Master's level, such as the MSc Marketing and MSc Industrial Relations and HR Management courses.

Assessment method

Students are required to participate in online discussions and activities throughout the year. All modules are individually assessed. Typically, assessments consist of assignments and end of year/end-of-semester examinations. Assessments may include: online activities, essays, written reports, presentations, individual and group projects. Written examinations are required in a limited number of numeracy modules (which take place at NUI Galway).
